The contrast between an interior of coated paper and endpapers of offset paper contributes to the feeling of holding and leafing through a precious object. These can use papers of different types and weights. Separate endpapers consist of two leaflets added at the beginning and at the end of the book, between the cover and the interior. It takes a bit of charm out of the bound book, but simplifies production and allows a saving on cost. We then have the same paper and same density for the interior and for the endpapers. We use them most often for works like low-page-count children’s storybooks. In the case of included endpapers, these are an integral part of the book.– The endpapers can be separate or included. – The paper of the endpapers can either be the same type as that of the interior or not, for example coated interior pages and offset endpapers.

For example: Interior of 115 GSM, endpapers of 150 GSM, preferably 170 GSM if coated paper, inside of 130 GSM, endpapers always 150/170 GSM and so on. It is possible for it to be equal to the density of the interior if that is 150 GSM. It must also always be greater than the density of the paper for the interior. – To have the necessary strength, the density of the endpapers must be at least 150 GSM in offset paper and a minimum of 150 GSM, ideally 170 GSM, for coated paper. – Their number is fixed and invariable: 4 pages at the beginning and 4 pages at the end. – The first of the front endpapers and the last of the back endpapers are always clear, because they are laminated onto the second and third of the hardcover. – Their main function is to join the inside to the cover, and to do so efficiently.
